Call into our children’s garden for fun, free tree activities for families. Try our twig twinning challenge, do some bark rubbing and check out how old our tree stumps are by counting the tree rings and learn fun ways of measuring how tall a tree is! Kids can make their own pots and plant up a seedling tree to take home and take care of.
Grownups can see how the experts plant and measure a variety of trees.
Tree Walks and self-guided trails will also be available.
For information on times of events check into the Visitor Centre

Planning a school tour? Book a tour during National Tree Week and your class can take your very own tree away with you for planting. Our celebration of trees continues long after the launch. From the 5th of March onwards a Bark Trail and Native Tree Trail will be available to pick up at the Visitor Centre during open hours.
Beidh leagan Gaeilge ann freisin, ar fáil ag an deasc san Ionad Cúairteóiri ar feadh Seachtain na Gaeilge!

Tuesday, 14 February 2017
To celebrate National Tree Week, Dublin Zoo will host a tree-mendously fun-filled and informative event for visitors on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of March. Over the course of the two-day experience, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of trees to our environment and how to plant and grow them, plus take part in lots of special activities, including wildlife inspired workshops and a tree trail. What’s more, those in attendance will also receive their very own complimentary tree to plant at home!

Saturday, 4th March

11 am – Walk with Stephen Butler, Curator of Horticulture. There is a wide range of native and exotic trees in the zoo, conifers that can reach 110 metres, willows that can grow 3ms a year, oaks that can have 500 insect species living in their canopy, birch that can be tapped to make wine from the sap, and confused ash that can be either male or female, come and find out more!

2pm – Biologist and radio personality Éanna Ni Lamhna will host a walk and talk tour for all on native species.

Sunday, 5th March

2pm – Well-known environmentalist Paddy Madden will give visitors an insight into planting and garden wildlife.

Tree Council of Ireland in association with the National Botanic Gardens

Description

In a wide-ranging illustrative and personal talk, George Cunningham will tree-travel from his midland home and around Ireland to the Pacific, the Caribbean and California. Drawing on his own extensive tree-book collection he will highlight some of his favourite volumes and writings. Touching briefly on trees in Irish history and historic tree places, he will conclude with his tree-hopes for the future.

George Cunningham, FSA, M.Litt., MA (Honora Causa NUI Galway), author, historian, editor, publisher and bibliophile is a former primary school principal and a community activist at many levels, not least the promotion of an awareness of trees. Now a national director of Crann he has revived its SW Midlands branch, incorporating it into Roscrea’s Tidy Tows. He has taught and lectured at all levels and gave seventeen years public service to the GA of UL and its library. He directs the Roscrea Conference (1987 to date); the Spring conference in April 2017 is the 60th consecutive gathering at the Cistercian Abbey. Prominently associated all his life with all aspects of Irish heritage, a noted bibliophile his personal library includes over 2,000 natural history volumes.
