This is one of the trees in a field known as “Battle Field” in which the lime trees, planted around 1780 by Thomas Bligh, brother of Vice Admiral William Bligh of HMS Bounty, were laid out in military formation to commemorate battles between the English and French. The layout of these trees can be seen on 18th-century maps.
