Get a free sapling tree for your class for Tree Day 2018
The Tree Council of Ireland with the support of Tetra Pak have 1,000 sapling trees to give away. The Guelder Rose is one of our lesser known native deciduous trees. It grows in dampish areas in hedges and small woods. It is a small tree, growing to a maximum of 4 metres. It bears discs of creamy white flowers in early summer which are excellent for pollinators and bunches of translucent bright red berries which the birds love, in early autumn. The Guelder Rose, known as Viburnum opulus in Latin, has its own Irish name – Caorchon – which tells us that it is a native Irish Tree and thus supports a great deal of biodiversity of invertebrate life. The Tree Council of Ireland, with the support of Tetra Pak , is giving schools the opportunity to acquire one of these to plant with their class for Tree Day on 4Th October either in a pot indoors or outside in the soil. The Theme for this year is ‘ Be nature nice! or Bí dóighiúl don dúlra! We have a lot of woodland walks arranged for schools both in local parks and nearby forest areas.
