Horse Chestnut

This tree originated in the Balkans. Its large brown sticky buds open in March, and the compound leaves have up to seven palmate leaflets. By May the tree is covered with large "candles" of many white flowers. The prickly green fruit forms by mid-summer, containing the chestnuts or "conkers" which ripen in autumn to a shiny mahogany colour.
Up to 40m.
